Arctic Circle 100 × 76 cm
"Arctic Circle" is an exploration of stark beauty, natural formations, and the evocative power of contrasting elements. My artistic intent with this piece was to translate the rugged textures and intriguing shapes found in icy landscapes into a sculptural fabric artwork.
The Creative Process
- Material Choice: I selected a fabric with a natural drape and a surface that readily shows texture. The choice of a pale, almost off-white color evokes the starkness and vastness of arctic environments, reminiscent of snow and ice.
- Sculpting the Landscape: The core of the creation lies in the meticulous manipulation of the fabric. I've gathered, folded, and layered the material to mimic the irregular, rugged surfaces of ice floes or snowdrifts. The emphasis is on creating a complex topography of peaks, valleys, and a freeflowing icy river, capturing the natural, uneven beauty of frozen landscapes.
- The Unveiling of Color: A deep, contrasting green forms a central "river" or "opening" within the textured expanse. This element was strategically placed to create visual interest and a sense of depth. The sharp, organic edges where the fabric meets the green color are crucial, suggesting natural breaks in the ice or the profound darkness of deep water beneath.
- Framing: The artwork is framed in a simple, natural wood floating frame. This choice allows the textured fabric and the striking color contrast to be the absolute focus, enhancing the artwork's contemporary feel and emphasizing its sculptural qualities.
Artistic Intent
"Arctic Circle" aims to capture the raw, untamed beauty of polar regions. The pale, textured fabric represents the vast, icy expanses, while the vibrant green symbolizes the hidden depths or life that exists within or beneath this frozen world. The name "Arctic Circle" evokes a sense of remoteness, mystery, and the unique geological formations found at the earth's extremes. I wanted to create a piece that is both visually striking through its color contrast and deeply engaging through its tactile surface, inviting viewers to contemplate the textures and hidden narratives of natural landscapes.
